Women’s Action Network Portsmouth

We are a group of local inclusionary feminists who are campaigning for change. Our organisation is dedicated to empowering women and promoting gender equality.

We launch our campaigns after hearing the voices of local people – all people, irrespective of gender, race, sexuality or religion. We are a newly formed group inspired by Women’s Action Group Dorset (WAND), founded in 2010. Our aims are similar – to unite women and enable collaboration over common issues through our collective strengths and actions, striving to reach those most in need and reducing gaps in inequality”.

These include women’s healthcare issues, gender imbalance in the government and workplace, difficulties in finding quality and affordable childcare, which tends to impact women most and combating violence against women and girls. We also aim to promote STEM learning for girls in our city and look at real issues like period poverty.

But it don’t stop there.

We are activists, fully prepared to protest when required, and just now, in Portsmouth, there is plenty to protest about.

We believe that every woman has the right to live a life free from violence, sexism, patriarchy, racism, Islamophobia, Anti-Semitism, homophobia, transphobia, oppression and discrimination. We aim to provide support, resources, and advocacy for women in our community.

Our core membership originates from some in the “Ripper and Co Protest Group” – a group of people from across the city and indeed countrywide horrified that a cocktail bar/restaurant could open in our city, exploiting the brutal deaths of women in the name of profit.

We are non-political, working with everyone to improve the lives of Women and Girls across our city and are guided by a steering committee made up of specialists in their field, along with volunteers.

Our steering committee meets to decide what activities and projects to focus on and organise our events. We are a friendly and informal group of women and always welcome new members. If you are interested in joining us, please get in touch.

We hope you find the information you need here. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
